KUWAIT: Zain Kuwait organized a trip to Um Al-Maradim Island in cooperation with its strategic partner, the Kuwait Dive Team, as part of its commitment to supporting environmental initiatives and achieving sustainability goals. The mission included installing marine moorings to designate safe anchoring zones, monitoring coral reef health, and a beach clean-up on the island. This step aims to strengthen the protection of biodiversity in Kuwait’s environment, as Um Al-Maradim Island is one of the main nesting grounds for sea turtles.
It serves as a natural refuge relied upon by thousands of marine organisms and faces challenges caused by pollution, unsustainable coastal activities, and rising sea temperatures due to climate change. The trip included the installation of marine moorings to designate safe anchoring zones and the monitoring of coral reefs to track the health of marine ecosystems, in addition to cleaning the island’s shores. The Zain Youth & Partnerships team took part alongside young volunteers and cadets from the Kuwait Dive Team, in a step that embeds sustainability values in the next generation from an early age.

Kuwait Dive Team cadets helped install the moorings.

Zain has supported hundreds of environmental missions that removed thousands of tons of debris.
These efforts continue within a strategic partnership that has extended for more than 28 years between Zain and the Kuwait Dive Team. During this period, the company has provided four fully equipped boats to support the team’s volunteer operations, which have resulted in hundreds of environmental missions, the removal of thousands of tons of waste, and the protection of tens of thousands of marine creatures.
The Zain boat also contributes to tasks that include installing and maintaining moorings around coral reefs, lifting fishing nets, waste, and debris, monitoring coral condition on a regular basis, and submitting reports to the relevant authorities. Marine moorings are an environmentally friendly method that facilitates the safe anchoring of boats and yachts and preserves seabeds and reefs, which reduces the negative impact of traditional anchoring methods on wildlife around Kuwait’s islands and coasts.
Zain’s environmental initiatives are grounded in its comprehensive sustainability strategy, which focuses on reducing the impacts of climate change and achieving carbon neutrality through practical initiatives that include supporting local environmental partnerships, coral reef monitoring programs, empowering youth with sustainability skills, and integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards across the supply chain.
The company also continues to invest in innovative environmental technology solutions such as the BeBot beach-cleaning robot, which combs and sifts sand, collects buried litter, gathers seaweed, and levels beach areas. It runs on electricity powered by renewable energy, and its previous activations have resulted in the collection of large quantities of waste from various beaches in Kuwait.
