KUWAIT: Ambassador of Switzerland to Kuwait Tiziano Balmelli said the upcoming visit of the Swiss President Guy Parmelin to Kuwait represents a landmark moment in bilateral relations between the two countries.
In a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Ambassador Balmelli noted that the visit constitutes the first and most significant event marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Kuwait, expressing pride that the visit is taking place at the highest level.
He explained that the visit aims, to honor the long-standing and solid friendship between the two nations, saying that Kuwaitis were among the first from the Gulf region to visit Switzerland and to establish mutually beneficial partnerships with the Swiss people as early as the 1930s. The ambassador added that the visit also is expected to contribute to strengthening and expanding bilateral relations across a wide range of fields and at various levels.
Balmelli pointed out that Switzerland and Kuwait share core values, including the promotion of dialogue and peace as well as a humanitarian work, noting that these issues are of importance not only to both countries but also to the international community as a whole.
He recalled that Switzerland and Kuwait signed an agreement in Bern last May in the field of humanitarian aid and development cooperation to enhance joint efforts in supporting those in need.
The first project funded by both countries focuses on assisting civilians affected by the war in Sudan, he stated adding that additional projects are currently under consideration.
He also stressed that both countries are major contributors to the International Committee of the Red Cross, reflecting their shared commitment to humanitarian principles. On economic cooperation, the Swiss ambassador said both sides are keen to increase bilateral trade and investment, noting that while the private sector plays a leading role, high-level visits such as this one help boost motivation and ambition.
He noted that the President’s visit coincides with the first Swiss-Kuwaiti business days in Kuwait, with around 14 Swiss companies visiting to explore new partnerships, in addition to the “Switzerland Travel Experience” event bringing together more than 20 Swiss tourism operators with local travel agents.Balmelli also welcomed the recent announcement by Kuwait Airways to operate three weekly direct flights to Zurich starting in June, alongside existing flights to Geneva, describing the move as a significant development that reflects the strength of bilateral relations and supports further cooperation in various fields.
The ambassador described Kuwait as a constructive partner with a positive role in the region, commending Kuwait’s policy of peace and dialogue.
He concluded by expressing confidence in the future of Swiss-Kuwaiti relations, noting that strong people-to-people ties and the presence of generations of Kuwaiti families with deep connections to Switzerland form the true backbone of the long-standing friendship between the two countries. — KUNA
