Jeremie Frimpong relished his first Anfield goal to help Liverpool’s Emirates FA Cup progress on Monday night via a 4-1 victory over Barnsley.
The Reds set up a meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion in round four of the competition courtesy of the win against the Tykes at Anfield.
Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring on the night in spectacular fashion, ahead of Frimpong himself finding the back of the net for his first club goal on home soil.
Former Academy graduate Adam Phillips then made the most of a Szoboszlai error inside his own box to reduce the deficit, but late strikes from substitutes Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike confirmed Liverpool’s spot in the next stage.
Read Frimpong’s post-match thoughts when speaking to Liverpoolfc.com below.
On the performance and progress in the competition…
I think it was a good performance. We went out there and gave it our all and won 4-1. I’m proud of the team.
On his goal…
I feel like I got a bit of stick back home against Arsenal because instead of passing it to Flo I should’ve shot. I just thought this time I’m going to smash it! I just wanted to shoot and I took the chance.
On scoring his first goal at Anfield…
Exactly. It’s my first goal at home. It meant a lot to me because obviously I’ve been injured for most of the time in Liverpool. To score this goal was really like a relief.
On impacting games from the right-hand side…
I just want to help the team and I want to use my ability. I’m just happy to be on the pitch and playing football. I’m happy.
On how much of an impact Szoboszlai has had this season…
Dom’s an amazing player. The first time I played against him was when he was at RB Leipzig. I could tell he was a great player and he was going to go to a big club. It’s no surprise he’s at Liverpool. He’s a big impact for us. He’s everywhere on the pitch and he can play any position. It’s his work-rate and his attacking and defending ability. We’re just pleased to have him.
On having real aims of going far in the FA Cup…
Everywhere I’ve been I’ve won everything and that’s what I want to do here. That’s why I play football. I want to win trophies.
