First half
Amid the driving rain and wind, Mohamed Salah curled an early sighter over the crossbar after being teed up by Florian Wirtz.
Most of the attacking threat was being offered by Liverpool and Salah, having been played in by Szoboszlai, saw a cut-back aimed for Gakpo cut out, before a last-ditch clearance prevented Szoboszlai from connecting with Wirtz’s cross.
But, midway through the half, Bournemouth took the lead when Evanilson fired Alex Scott’s pull-back home from close range. To compound matters, Joe Gomez picked up an injury by colliding with Alisson Becker in the act of trying to stop Evanilson from scoring.
Wataru Endo was readied, though was unable to enter the field as the ball did not go dead until several minutes later, when the hosts doubled their advantage.
James Hill’s pass was weighted nicely into the path of Jimenez, who had got the run on Milos Kerkez before finishing.
The Reds responded well and halved the deficit in the final minute of the half as Van Dijk darted to the near post to meet Szoboszlai’s in-swinging corner with a deft, glancing header.
