TOKYO: A Kuwaiti doctoral student has put his country on the international science stage, presenting research on nuclear fusion materials at a major global conference in Japan. Abdulmohssen Abaalkhail, a Kuwaiti PhD student at the University of Miami, was invited to speak at the six-day International Conference on Fusion Reactor Materials (ICFRM-22), which opened Sept 28 in Shizuoka City, east of Tokyo. He was the only Kuwaiti — and among the few Middle Eastern participants — selected to showcase his doctoral work in mechanical and aerospace engineering.
His presentation, titled “A Microstructure-based Viscoplastic Model of First Wall & Blanket Fusion Materials,” introduced a model to predict how reactor materials perform under extreme heat and repeated use. The research aims to support safer and more efficient nuclear fusion energy.
“Being the only Kuwaiti and the only participant from the Gulf region, presenting at ICFRM-22, this places Kuwait on an international stage in a highly impactful scientific field that leading programs prioritize through the ITER partnership, including the European Union, US, Japan, China, India, South Korea and Russia,” Abaalkhail told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
The biennial conference is considered a leading forum for experts from universities, national laboratories and industry, including teams backed by the US Department of Energy and EUROfusion. — KUNA
