KUWAIT: Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday voiced grave concern over the accelerating deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Sudan, warning that conditions have reached critical levels. In a statement, the ministry called on all parties to take urgent measures to protect civilians and to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid in line with international humanitarian law and the 2023 Jeddah Declaration on the Protection of Civilians in Sudan. The ministry further expressed support for the statement issued by the Aligned for Advancing Lifesaving and Peace in Sudan (ALPS) group, commending ongoing international efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
Meanwhile, the United States and several key international partners, including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, the African Union and the United Nations, issued a joint appeal on Wednesday urging Sudan’s warring sides to agree to humanitarian pauses in the fighting to allow the delivery of aid. The group said it was “appalled by the continuous deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Sudan,” pointing to the growing numbers of people facing malnutrition and famine, as well as restrictions on aid access in several areas.
The statement highlighted the urgency of the situation in North Darfur and Kordofan, calling for safe passage for humanitarian convoys and the protection of civilians fleeing conflict zones. Sudan has been gripped by violence and hunger since clashes erupted in April 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. According to UN estimates, nearly 25 million people now face severe food insecurity, with millions cut off from life-saving assistance. — Agencies
