THE HAGUE: Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defense and Chairman of the National Committee for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Sheikh Dr Abdullah Meshaal Al-Sabah, affirmed Kuwait’s steadfast support for the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and its commitment to preventing the proliferation of chemical weapons, with a vision for a Middle East and world free of such arms. In a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Thursday, the Ministry of Defense said Sheikh Abdullah Al-Sabah, in his address as head of the Kuwaiti delegation at the 30th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CSP-30), held from November 24-28, underscored the importance of adherence to verification mechanisms and accountability for any violations by States Parties.
He also reiterated Kuwait’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people and condemned any use of prohibited chemical substances against civilians, describing military operations targeting Palestinian civilians as clear violations of international humanitarian law. Sheikh Abdullah highlighted Kuwait’s plans to establish new scientific teams to strengthen the organization’s research and verification capabilities and expressed support for the creation of a specialized scientific laboratory in Kuwait. He called for enhanced international cooperation to eliminate chemical weapons and stressed the importance of ongoing constructive dialogue to safeguard global peace and security.
On the sidelines of the conference, Sheikh Abdullah and his delegation held bilateral meetings with heads of delegations and international officials to explore opportunities for technical and legislative cooperation in implementing the Convention.
Kuwait’s delegation included the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the Kuwaiti Embassy in the Netherlands, Ibrahim Al-Duai, along with representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense.— KUNA
