KUWAIT: On November 3, the government of Japan announced the conferment of the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, bestowed by His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, upon His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, former Prime Minister of Kuwait, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to strengthening and promoting friendly relations between Japan and Kuwait.
His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah has made remarkable contributions over many years to the enhancement, deepening and expansion of Japan-Kuwait relations through his service as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Chief of the Amiri Diwan and Prime Minister. In 1990, during the Gulf War, he visited Japan as the representative of the Amir of Kuwait to request Japan’s support. This visit led to Japan’s provision of approximately $13.5 billion in assistance and the dispatch of the Self-Defense Forces overseas for the first time, laying the foundation for the strong relationship of trust between the two nations.
As Chief of the Amiri Diwan, he also played a key role in realizing the visit of Their Imperial Highnesses the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Japan (at that time) to Kuwait, as well as the visit of His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the 13th Amir of Kuwait to Japan in 1995, thereby deepening the bonds between the Imperial Family and the Kuwaiti Ruling Family.
During his tenure as Prime Minister, His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah worked tirelessly to expand cooperation in the economic and commercial fields, broadening collaboration beyond the oil sector through the establishment of a Joint Committee and the conclusion of a tax treaty.
Even after leaving the official post, he has continued to engage with the Imperial Family and maintain a relationship of trust spanning two generations, contributing continuously to the development of Japan-Kuwait relations. In recognition of these distinguished achievements, he has been awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.
