KUWAIT: The Public Authority for Civil Aviation said on Thursday it diverted several incoming flights to neighboring countries in the early hours due to thick fog, while the Met Office expects fog to return for the next three days accompanied by scattered showers. The fog covered most of Kuwait due to saturated southeasterly winds blowing over the Gulf and bringing high humidity, which condensed into fog due to low temperatures.
The Met Office said it recorded 6 degrees Celsius in Salmi on the Saudi border at dawn on Thursday, the lowest temperature in Kuwait so far this winter season. Temperatures in other areas ranged between 12 degrees in desert areas and 22 in Salmiya. The Met Office issued a new warning for Thursday night and Friday morning, saying that “visibility is expected to be less than 1,000 meters over some areas due to fog”.
Visibility was reduced to less than 100 meters early Thursday, which made it difficult for planes to take off or land. Acting head of the Meteorological Department Dherar Al-Ali said that fog is expected to form overnight in several areas in Kuwait between Thursday and Sunday, accompanied by scattered rain. Temperatures will remain around 30 degrees Celsius during daytime in most areas, he said.
Al-Ali said the country is affected by an extension of a high-pressure system from the northwest, accompanied by a cold and humid air mass. Temperatures are expected to gradually drop, with light to moderate southeasterly to variable winds that may occasionally become active.
On Thursday, the weather was warm, humid and partly cloudy, with variable to southeasterly winds ranging from 6 to 26 km/h and a chance of fog in some areas. The maximum temperature ranged between 29°C and 31°C, and the sea slight with waves of 1-3 feet. At night, the weather was cool, humid and partly cloudy, with southeasterly to variable winds of 8-28 km/h and a chance of fog in some areas. The minimum temperature was between 10°C and 12°C, and the sea remained slight.
