Robert Lewandowski announced his return to fitness with a hat trick as Barcelona closed the gap to LaLiga leaders Real Madrid with an untidy 4-2 win away to Celta Vigo. The Catalan club took advantage of Madrid’s goalless draw at Rayo Vallecano earlier in the day to move back into second place just three points behind.Lewandowski, who only last week returned in a brief substitute appearance after a muscle injury sidelined him for a month, scored his first goals for the club since the end of September.On-loan Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford claimed assists for two of Lewandowski’s goals and also…
On the VAR decision to rule out his goal, and Liverpool’s performance…In football there are obviously key decisions. That obviously happens and the officials are deciding this and we have to deal with it on the pitch – both teams. I think there is no point to discuss this from my point of view. The reality is that we lost here 3-0 and that is a big blow, definitely. On the game itself…I think obviously the first half was difficult. They were much more comfortable on the ball in terms of creating an extra overload in the back with Bernardo [Silva]…
On the result and Liverpool’s performance… They were, in every aspect of football, better [than us in] the first half. I would say like last season; I saw a lot of similarities between last season and this season with one main difference in that after we struggled in the first 25 minutes a lot we scored a set-piece. That changed the game. They kept on outplaying us for 90 minutes but it did help us to get some energy to keep defending well. Last season, they didn’t create that many chances. I think today they created more, but it wasn’t…
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe has claimed the confidence of his players is suffering after their winless away run continued with the 3-1 defeat at Brentford. The Magpies threw away another lead on their travels as goals from Kevin Schade and Igor Thiago (two) saw Brentford complete a second-half turnaround. Howe and his side were met with jeers from the away end at the Gtech Community Stadium after the final whistle, as their dismal run away from home extended to 10 games in the Premier League.Their last win came against Leicester City in April, and Howe admits his squad are…
NEW YORK (AP) — Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz were indicted Sunday on charges they took bribes from sports bettors to throw specific pitches that would trigger winnings on in-game prop bets. This included throwing pitches intentionally outside of the strike zone or within certain velocity ranges. Here’s a closer look at those pitches.Emmanuel ClaseMay 19, 2023The indictment cites this outing without a photo of the specific pitch, saying the scheme included a bet of about…
Doku shows it is not just HaalandOne amusing statistic going into Manchester City’s game against Liverpool was that City’s second-highest goalscorer in the Premier League this season was Burnley’s Maxime Esteve as a result of his two own goals in a 5-1 win for City back in late September. That stat remains intact because the goals by Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku in City’s 3-0 win were their first in the competition this season but City’s all-round display – and that of Doku, in particular – showed there is more to them than Erling Haaland. It was the livewire winger who…
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Police were investigating on Sunday after five people were wounded, one seriously, in a weekend shooting outside a supermarket in San Francisco, authorities said. Officers responding to reports of gunfire around 9 p.m. Saturday found multiple victims near a Safeway in the Outer Richmond neighborhood, according to the city’s police department. A man with life-threatening injuries and four juveniles with non-life-threatening injuries were rushed to a hospital, police said in a statement. Police Capt. Roy Keane insists Liverpool are in crisis after producing a “weak” performance in defeat at Man City, while Gary Neville thought they looked like a team “there to be beaten” after Arne Slot’s side succumbed to a fifth Premier League defeat of the season at the Etihad Stadium.Liverpool were second best at the Etihad, swept aside by goals from Erling Haaland, Nico Gonzalez and the outstanding Jeremy Doku, with Haaland missing a penalty to boot, as City put their hand up as Arsenal’s nearest challengers for the Premier League title. The Reds, however, fell to a fifth defeat in 11…
