TAN TAN, Morocco (AP) — The U.S. military is backing off its usual talk of good governance and countering insurgencies’ underlying causes, instead leaning into a message that its fragile allies in Africa must be ready to stand more on their own.At African Lion, its largest joint training exercise on the continent, that shift was clear: “We need to be able to get our partners to the level of independent operations,” Gen. Michael Langley said in an interview with The Associated Press.“There needs to be some burden sharing,” Langley, the U.S. military’s top official in Africa, said on Friday, the…

Algiers and Paris are locked in a familiar, almost ritualistic dance of diplomatic escalation. Barely a week passes without a fresh contretemps, a new dispute injecting poison into their already volatile relationship. The recent expulsion of French embassy staff by Algiers – a direct response to the arrest in Paris of an Algerian consulate official allegedly embroiled in a kidnapping case – is merely the latest step in this predictable tango. France is expected to retaliate, prompting another counter-move from Algiers. This tempestuous je t’aime, moi non plus dynamic – a familiar love-hate relationship characterised by years of turbulence and…

CNN — From day to day, Donald Trump’s second term often seems like a roman candle of grievance, with the administration spraying attacks in all directions on institutions and individuals the president considers hostile. Hardly a day goes by without Trump pressuring some new target: escalating his campaign against Harvard by trying to bar the university from enrolling foreign students; deriding musicians Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift on social media; and issuing barely veiled threats against Walmart and Apple around the companies’ responses to his tariffs. Trump’s panoramic belligerence may appear as to lack a more powerful unifying theme than…
Resilience to excellence.Arsenal’s journey to becoming Queens of Europe has been far from simple. A season of setbacks, especially in the Champions League, would be enough to break most teams, but not Arsenal. I’ve been lucky enough to be around the team all week and all season. When they said they believed they could beat the all-conquering Barcelona you could tell it was genuine. No side has gone from the start of the Champions League qualifying rounds to the final, never mind win the whole competition. They lost the first leg against Hacken during qualifying but made it through.
