FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Andreas Pereira was nicknamed the “Preseason Pirlo” by supporters during his time at Manchester United. It was complimentary and mockery in equal measure, but underneath it all, the moniker applied to the Brazil international emphasized a key point about the risks of judging a player by what they do outside regular-season games.Pereira is a good player, one who has carved out a respectable career with Fulham since leaving United in 2022 after four loan spells away from the club, but he was never able to make the grade at Old Trafford despite being compared to former…

CNN  —  Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has approved a law to halt cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a move which will likely obscure any attempt by Tehran to restart its damaged nuclear program. Wednesday’s decision comes a week after Iran’s parliament passed a law to suspend cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog. Iran blames the IAEA for collaborating with Israel and providing a pathway for strikes on its nuclear facilities, an accusation which the agency denies. Pezeshkian ordered Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, the Supreme National Security Council, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to begin implementing the…

Editor’s Note: Design for Impact is a series spotlighting innovative solutions for communities affected by the climate crisis, natural disasters and other humanitarian emergencies. CNN  —  In the multibillion-dollar global fight against wildfires, early detection is critical. Satellites, drones, thermal cameras and manned lookout towers are just some of the tools currently used to alert authorities and first responders to imminent threats. In under-resourced areas, however, these defenses can be prohibitively expensive. That’s why a group of recent design graduates has developed a smaller, simpler and, they say, cheaper solution: A pinecone-sized fire detector that can give vulnerable communities an…

Hungry, terrified, and crammed into a small apartment, as intense Israeli bombardment rocked the area around them. This is how Hadeel Saleh and her family of nine spent several days in March 2024 during a violent Israeli raid on Gaza City’s al-Shifa hospital and the surrounding neighbourhood. Their ordeal was interrupted by dozens of Israeli soldiers storming the home without warning. Without hesitation, they shot and killed her 60-year-old Palestinian father. When her older brother rushed to help, he too was gunned down.  During the raid on the hospital, Israeli forces had put it out of service and then went door…

Monterrey head coach Domenec Torrent criticized the decisions made by referee Facundo Tello in the 2-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the Club World Cup round-of-16 match on Tuesday, saying that a foul and a penalty should have been taken to VAR.The coach claims a foul by Julian Ryerson on Gerardo Arteaga leading up to the Bundesliga side’s second goal should’ve been enough reason to cancel the 2-0, before insisting a foul on Jesús ‘Tecatito’ Corona inside the box needed to be reviewed as well.”We are Rayados, we want to win. We are not satisfied with this result. We played…

Reuters  —  Denmark on Tuesday expanded its military service to include women, as the Nordic country seeks to recruit more soldiers and strengthen its defenses amid heightened security concerns across Europe. Under a law passed by Denmark’s parliament in June 2023, Denmark will require women turning 18 after July 1, 2025 to register for assessment days for potential military conscription, aligning with measures already in place for men. Until now, women, who last year made up around 24% of all recruits, had been allowed to join the military on a voluntary basis. “In the world situation we’re in right now,…

CNN  —  There was once a time when American men dominated the tennis world at Wimbledon. The likes of Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Stan Smith and Arthur Ashe saw widespread success in the 70s and 80s, before Pete Sampras simply dominated the 90s at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. When Sampras won his final Wimbledon title in 2000, the realistic expectation was that it wouldn’t be too long before another American man replicated the achievement. In reality, though, it would be the last title for a very long time. It is now 25 years and counting since an American…
