On Monday evening, the head coach from the red half of Manchester admitted his biggest fear was his team would sink back to the levels of last season. On Tuesday night, it may have been the other major Manchester manager thinking the same thing. In their 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday, City looked like the team who dropped out of the title race in the autumn of last term. Without the dominating presence of Rodri, City were once again susceptible to opposition fast breaks – where both goals came from, and more should have been scored by the German…

Concacaf rivals Weston McKennie and Jonathan David teamed up for a pair of goals to hand Juventus a late — and needed — 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League on Tuesday night.Juve came into the game in frigid Norway on the outside looking in to reach the knockout rounds and soon found themselves a goal down when Ole Didrik Blomberg pounced on a ball at the back post and blasted in the first goal of the game. But Loïs Openda hauled Juventus back to level terms before U.S. midfielder McKennie skied above his Bodo defender to head home a…

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored two goals in four minutes as Marseille completed a Champions League turnaround to beat Newcastle 2-1 at the Stade Velodrome. Newcastle opened the scoring after just six minutes when Harvey Barnes netted his fourth goal in the competition. It was part of a rampant start for the away side, who had just moments prior seen Malick Thiaw’s header cleared off the line by former Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. However, bursting out of the blocks in the second half, Aubameyang latched onto Darryl Bakola’s through pass, making an on-rushing Nick Pope look comical as he took a touch…
Manchester City fell to a second successive defeat – and a first Champions League group/league phase home loss in seven years – as Bayer Leverkusen claimed a 2-0 win at the Etihad.Lyon were the last team to beat Man City at home before the knockout rounds in September 2018, winning 2-1. Pep Guardiola served a touchline ban that evening and was replaced in the dugout by Mikel Arteta. But Guardiola had a front row seat for Tuesday’s defeat. He made 10 changes to his starting XI from the weekend’s Premier League loss at Newcastle, benching the likes of Erling Haaland,…
Estevao outshone Lamine Yamal by scoring a stunning second-half goal in a dominant 3-0 win for Chelsea over 10-man Barcelona that takes them into the Champions League top eight. In the first meeting between the two best 18-year-olds in world football, it was Chelsea’s Brazilian sensation that stole the show, thundering an effort into the roof of the net for his side’s second after beating Pau Cubarsi, on a disappointing night for Yamal. Marc Cucurella, the player of the match, did a job on his Spain team-mate, locking down Barcelona’s biggest threat in perhaps his greatest performance in blue, as Chelsea…
Tonda Eckert made it four wins out of four as Southampton caretaker by masterminding a 3-0 victory over Leicester in the Championship.Finn Azaz scored for the third match in a row and Olabade Aluko was sent off on his first professional start, either side of Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ brace of headers in a horror first half for the Foxes. The four wins under Eckert match the number they had managed from the start of last season until Will Still’s sacking. Saints had been three points off the relegation zone when Eckert took charge and they are now two points shy of…
I have known Melanie Phillips for some time. In fact, she was at one point my home desk news editor at the Guardian. Strange though it may now seem, Phillips in that era epitomised the anguished North London liberal, existentially unsure about whether to obey the dictates of her heart or her head. Phillips is by no means the only former Guardian colleague to make the journey from soft liberal left to hard Islamophobic right, from an Ed Miliband figure to a Michael Gove. But unlike some I could mention, this rite of passage had little to do with money.…
