KUWAIT: The Embassy of Austria in Kuwait marked Austria’s National Day with a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the country’s historic declaration of permanent neutrality on October 26, 1955 – a milestone that paved the way for Austria’s full sovereignty after World War II.
In his address, the Austrian Ambassador Ulrich Frank emphasized that neutrality has been a cornerstone of Austria’s identity since the withdrawal of Allied forces in 1955, reaffirming Austria’s commitment as a member of the European Union, the United Nations, and a staunch defender of democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
Addressing the global challenges facing democracies, the Ambassador cited philosopher Sir Karl Popper, stressing that tolerance must be actively defended against intolerance, saying “If we do not defend tolerance against intolerance, tolerance will disappear.” Highlighting the bilateral relationship, the Ambassador affirmed that Austria and Kuwait enjoy strong and friendly relations built on mutual respect and shared values.

He stated “Our countries share many things. We are relatively small nations, we are prosperous nations, and most importantly, we are peaceful nations.” He commended Kuwait’s Vision 2035, describing it as “an ambitious plan that continues to transform the nation’s economy and society.” He emphasized that Austria can be an important partner for Kuwait in achieving these goals, particularly through collaboration in innovation, sustainable development and cultural exchange.
He added “Austria stands ready to work closely with Kuwait in the interest of both of our wonderful countries.” Turning to international affairs, the Ambassador underscored the importance of European cooperation and solidarity in ensuring peace and security amid global instability, including Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. He added that his country will continue to champion multilateralism and is running for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2027–2028 term, focusing on partnership, dialogue and trust.
The Ambassador also expressed deep concern over the continuing violence in the Middle East, describing the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “shocking and tragic.” He reiterated Austria’s call for a ceasefire, humanitarian access, and a renewed push toward a two-state solution that ensures peace and security. On the sidelines of the event, Ambassador Sami Abdulaziz Alhamad, Assistant Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs, praised the strong Kuwaiti-Austrian relations, expressing Kuwait’s aspiration for further cooperation in the fields of investment and trade. He added that Kuwait looks forward to seeing Austria’s participation in the country’s Vision 2035.
