KUWAIT: The Korean Embassy in Kuwait inaugurated the ninth annual Korean Street Food Festival on Thursday, welcoming guests to a lively celebration of Korean cuisine and culture. Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Counsellor Kim Hyejin, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Kuwait stated that the annual gathering has become a signature tradition that brings Koreans and Kuwaitis together through a shared love of cuisine. She highlighted the rapid rise of Korean restaurants across the country, saying “We feel more connected with Kuwait because of their love for Korean cuisine.”
The Korean Charge d’Affaires highlighted that Korea–Kuwait relations date back to “difficult times,” recalling Korea’s support during the Iraqi invasion. Economic ties between the two countries remain strong, she stated, and Korean companies have long participated in infrastructure projects in Kuwait, including the construction of major bridges. The Korean envoy added “We want to expand into different areas, including recycling systems and green energy. Korea has the technology to help address issues Kuwait faces.”
On the arrival of a new Korean ambassador to Kuwait, she said that the timeline remains uncertain, but hopefully next year. On the cultural level, she noted that the ongoing rise of K-pop, Korean dramas, and films has significantly increased interest in Korean culture across Kuwait. This cultural wave has also encouraged many Kuwaitis to learn the Korean language. “We even have a Sejong Institute teaching Korean at the university level. Sometimes people come to me speaking Korean, it surprises me, but I’m getting used to it,” she explained.
Counsellor Hyejin highlighted the growing presence of Korean flavors in Kuwait’s food scene, adding “K-food has become a delicious bridge between Korea and Kuwait. From spicy tteokbokki to comforting bibimbap, every dish tells a story and today, we are thrilled to share not only our cuisine but the vibrant energy of Korean culture.” She also noted the broader global rise of Korean culture, pointing to the Grammy nomination of “Golden,” the signature track from K-pop Demon Hunters, and the enthusiasm surrounding G-Dragon’s surprise APEC appearance. “Just as Korean music captures the world’s attention, Korean food is winning hearts everywhere, including right here in Kuwait,” she said.
