Robertson and his teammates could therefore take satisfaction from back-to-back wins following last weekend’s 2-0 success against Aston Villa and the left-back told Liverpoolfc.com: “Really pleasing. Glad we built on Saturday, trying to bring that consistency back.
“I thought from minute one we were all bang there tonight and just carried on from Saturday in terms of being hard to beat, working hard for each other, always trying to help your mate out. Then I thought the quality was there as well.
“I thought their ’keeper [Thibaut Courtois] was outstanding, he obviously managed to keep the score down. We had a few big chances, especially at the start of the second half. But 1-0, a pleasing night, a massive three points for us and now we move on.”
Prior to Mac Allister breaking the deadlock, Madrid goalkeeper Courtois had made several outstanding saves and Robertson added: “You just have to keep going. Probably the lads who played in the final in Paris [in 2022] had a bit of déjà vu! He’s an unbelievable ’keeper, exceptional, and he always seems to bring out his best against us.
“He’s really hard to beat but thankfully we just kept knocking at the door and we believed that if we kept creating the chances we would hopefully knock it down eventually, and thankfully Macca popped up and got the goal.
“Then we could probably have scored more, the game really opened up. We were then defending and playing on the counter-attack, which probably suited us in the last 10 to 15 minutes and just if that last pass was right we could have been in one-on-one.
“But everyone worked their socks off today, even the lads coming off the bench really played their part as well, and [it was] a massive all-round performance today.”
