Ambassador hails Erdogan’s visit to Kuwait as beginning of a new phase in bilateral relations
KUWAIT: President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Kuwait last week marked a new phase in the growing partnership between Turkey and Kuwait, said Ambassador Tuba Nur Sönmez during a reception held on Wednesday to celebrate the 102nd anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey.
Ambassador Sönmez said several agreements were signed during President Erdoğan’s visit in the fields of maritime, transport, investment and energy, paving the way for deeper cooperation. “These agreements lay the groundwork for collaboration between our two countries in various sectors and contribute meaningfully to Kuwait’s Vision 2035 development goals,” she said.
She also recalled a defining milestone last year – the historic visit of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to Turkey in May 2024. “As his first official visit beyond the Arab world in seven years, it signaled Kuwait’s recognition of Turkey as a strategic partner and ushered in a new era of cooperation,” Sönmez noted.

The ambassador expressed heartfelt gratitude for Kuwait’s swift and compassionate response following the devastating earthquakes in Turkey. “We will never forget the kindness, generosity and empathy extended to us. It is etched in our collective memory as a symbol of true brotherhood,” she said.
Cooperation between the two countries has always been strong, particularly on regional issues. Sönmez affirmed that Turkey and Kuwait maintain aligned, principled positions on key matters, particularly Palestine and Syria, guided by shared sensitivities and a commitment to justice.
“In these challenging times, our cooperation is more vital than ever, and the continued dialogue between our leaders offers meaningful contributions to regional peace and humanitarian efforts,” she said.
She further underscored Turkey’s call for international responsibility. “All institutions entrusted with the preservation of international peace and security, most notably the United Nations Security Council, must act with urgency and responsibility to prevent further destabilization in our region,” she added.
Ambassador Sönmez expressed appreciation to Kuwaiti activists Khaled Al-Abduljader, Abdullah Al-Mutawa and Dr Mohammad Jamal, who took part in the Global Sumud Flotilla and were present at the celebration. “They stood in solidarity with Gaza and the Palestinian people. Their courage and commitment are deeply appreciated,” she said.
