Jayden Danns scored his first Liverpool goals in a 3-0 home win over Saints in the Emirates FA Cup in February 2024, coming off the bench to net twice.
The Reds have gone on to reach the final in each of the last four seasons they have defeated Southampton in the League Cup. They lost at Wembley in 1987, 2016 and 2025, but won at Cardiff in 2003.
Thirty-nine years to the day of this game, Liverpool equalled the record for the biggest ever League Cup win when they defeated Fulham 10-0 at Anfield in the first leg of a second-round tie.
Southampton were the first team ever to eliminate Liverpool from the League Cup, winning 2-1 at Anfield in November 1960.
They have reached the third round by winning 1-0 at Northampton Town and then 3-0 at Norwich City.
This will be Saints’ fifth visit to Anfield since November 2021, each time with a different manager. Will Still follows Ivan Juric, Russell Martin, Nathan Jones and Ralph Hasenhuttl.
Adam Lallana is now first-team coach at Southampton. He played 178 times for Liverpool, scoring 22 goals, from 2014 to 2020 after joining from Saints.
