KUWAIT: Kuwait’s Ministry of Health said on Monday it had successfully carried out two heart transplants on a 10-year-old child and a man in his 50s, bringing the total number of heart transplants performed in the country to 13 since the launch of the national programme.
The surgeries were conducted on consecutive days at the Salman Al-Dabbous Cardiac Center, highlighting growing local capacity to perform highly complex cardiac procedures, the ministry said.
Health officials noted that 2025 marked a sharp expansion of the programme, with eight successful heart transplant surgeries recorded during the year, compared with one case in 2019, one in 2021, one in 2023, and two in 2024. The procedures were carried out in coordination with the Organ Procurement Program, reflecting the continued growth of the center’s clinical and technical expertise.
Consultant cardiac surgeon Professor Riyadh Al-Tarzi said the increase was supported by sustained investment in specialised teams and advanced medical infrastructure. He expressed appreciation for the Ministry of Health’s support, praising the close oversight of Health Minister Dr. Ahmad Abdulwahab Al-Awadhi and the guidance of Undersecretary Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, adding that advanced healthcare infrastructure had enabled medical teams to achieve the results.
The ministry said the milestone underscores Kuwait’s efforts to expand advanced organ transplant services and improve treatment options for patients with end-stage heart failure.
